AHS Guidance Curriculum:
Our Guidance curriculum is integrated into our schools curriculum. The curriculum is developmentally structured to meet the required needs according to the ASCA National Model. The topics are chosen based on the needs assessment results for our community. The curriculum integrates knowledge and skills appropriate for the students' developmental level. Our Counseling Department utilizes Guidance Curriculum Lesson Plans provided by ASCA. The topics include:
These lessons are presented in the classroom setting approximately once a month by professional school counselors. Approximately 15-25% of the professional school counselor's time is devoted to implementing Guidance Curriculum.
Another component of the guidance curriculum at AHS is exploring the Louisiana Connect online tool. This tool allows students to keep current on their progress in regards to graduation and TOPS scholarships. It also provides interest inventories to allow students to develop a career plan. LA Connect allows students to compare colleges, careers, develop resumes, and research scholarships. Each student on campus will be taken to a computer lab as a group a minimum of two times per year to explore this tool.
This LA Connect interactive website assists the counseling department in addressing the following ASCA Standards and each competency that the standard addresses (2004):
Standard A: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world
of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed
career decisions.
Standard B: Students will employ strategies to achieve future
career goals with success and satisfaction
Standard C: Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training, and the world of work.
